Drawing Tools

Pencil and Eraser

The Pencil and Eraser are the two most-used tools in Stitch A Lot Studio.

Pencil Tool (P)

The Pencil places stitches using your currently selected color and stitch type.

Click to Place

Click on a canvas cell to place a single stitch. The stitch uses whatever color is selected in the Color Palette and whatever stitch type is selected in the toolbar.

Click and Drag

Click and drag to draw a continuous stroke. Stitches are placed in every cell your cursor crosses. The entire stroke is treated as a single action, so pressing Ctrl+Z undoes the whole stroke at once.

Circle Placement

When the active stitch type is Circle, the Pencil has a special behavior. Each canvas cell is divided into a 3×3 grid of positions, and the circle is placed in the zone you click within the cell. This gives you 9 placement options per cell (top-left, top-center, top-right, middle-left, center, middle-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, bottom-right).

Eraser Tool (E)

The Eraser removes stitches from the canvas.

Precise Hit-Testing

The Eraser uses precise hit-testing rather than erasing the entire cell. This means:

  • Squares — Erased if you click within the cell
  • Circles — Erased only if you click within the circle radius
  • Half-squares and triangles — Erased only if you click within the filled area of the shape
  • Borders and cross lines — Erased if you click within the cell

If a cell contains multiple stitch types (for example, a circle and a border), only the stitch under your click point is removed. The others remain.

Click and Drag

Like the Pencil, you can click and drag to erase along a continuous stroke. The entire erase stroke is a single undo action.

iPad and Apple Pencil

Both tools work with touch and Apple Pencil on iPad. Apple Pencil provides precise input for detailed work.
