Fill and Color Swap

The Fill and Color Swap tools help you quickly color large areas of your design.

Fill Tool (G)

The Fill tool flood-fills a contiguous region with your selected color.

How It Works

  1. Select a color from the Color Palette
  2. Select the Fill tool (press G or click it in the toolbar)
  3. Click on the canvas

The fill spreads in four directions (up, down, left, right) from the cell you clicked. It replaces all connected stitches of the same color with your selected color.

If you click on an empty cell, the fill creates new stitches in all connected empty cells.

What Counts as "Connected"

The fill only spreads to adjacent cells that share the same color (or emptiness) as the cell you clicked. It does not spread diagonally, and it stops at color boundaries.

Fill works regardless of stitch type — any stitch with the matching color is replaced, whether it is a square, circle, half-square, or other type.

Undo

The entire fill operation is a single undo action. Press Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z to reverse it.

Color Swap Tool (C)

The Color Swap tool replaces every instance of one color with another across the entire active layer.

How It Works

  1. Select the replacement color from the Color Palette
  2. Select the Color Swap tool (press C or click it in the toolbar)
  3. Click on a stitch that has the color you want to replace

All stitches on the active layer that match the clicked color are instantly changed to your selected color. Unlike Fill, Color Swap is not limited to connected regions — it replaces every occurrence across the whole layer.

Use Cases

  • Quickly try a different thread color for a section of your design
  • Correct a color choice after stitching a large area
  • Merge two similar colors into one

The entire swap is a single undo action.
