Copy, Cut, and Paste
Copy and paste parts of a design within a pattern, or from one pattern into another.
What You Can Copy
- An area — Select it with the Select tool. Copies the stitches in the area
- A layer — Select it with the Move tool, or click it in the Layers panel
- A layer group — Ctrl-click (Cmd-click) several layers in the Layers panel. Backstitch on those layers comes along too
The Commands
| Command | Windows | Mac and iPad keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Copy | Ctrl+C | Cmd+C |
| Cut | Ctrl+X | Cmd+X |
| Paste | Ctrl+V | Cmd+V |
Copy, Cut, and Paste buttons are also in the left toolbar (show or hide them in Settings > Toolbar Visibility…), and on the Mac they're in the Edit menu.
Pasting Stitches
A pasted area lands where it was copied from — or in the middle of the screen if that spot is scrolled out of view — and floats so you can drag, nudge, flip, or rotate it. The tool switches to Move.
- Press Enter or click away to place it
- Press Escape to cancel the paste
- Press Undo to take it back
Pasting Layers
Pasted layers arrive as new layers above the active layer. With Layers turned off, a pasted group comes in as a single layer.
Pasting into Another Pattern
What you copy stays available until you quit the app, so you can open another pattern and paste into it. Threads that the other pattern doesn't have are added to its palette automatically when you place the paste. If the pasted design is bigger than the canvas, a message tells you that parts hang off the edge.
When Paste or Cut Is Unavailable
- Paste is unavailable when the active layer is locked or hidden
- Cut is unavailable when the layers you selected are locked
